In meeting with MDOT for a ferry terminal parking lot update, the Select Board and Lincolnville residents in attendance spoke with Aurele Gorneau, a project manager at MDOT.

In March, MDOT purchased the land previously owned by McLaughlin’s, a longstanding Lincolnville seafood restaurant, for development of a new parking lot. MDOT plans to expand the ferry terminal and its surrounding amenities to accommodate the influx of people traveling to Islesboro.

MDOT has contracted with Gorrill Palmer Consulting Engineers Inc. to look at options for the parking lot, and according to Gorneau, that research has identified a need for 30 more parking spaces.

Gorneau showed a conceptual mock-up with a 64-space parking lot, sidewalks and “green spaces.” However, in response to a question by resident Maria Irrera, he said MDOT “has to maximize the amount of spaces we get out of there. The terminal’s only going to continue to grow. There’s always going to be a need there.”

Gorneau noted the parking lot will be a paid lot — like the existing one across from the terminal — which will be operated by the Ferry Service.
